5 ways founders can keep up the pace without burning out

Research suggests that entrepreneurs are more at risk of burnout because they tend to be highly passionate about their work and are typically socially isolated, have financial stress, and operate in varying degrees of uncertainty. Yet burnout is avoidable with a little support and self-care, explains high performance expert, Melo Calarco, author of Beating Burnout – Finding Balance.

Starting and running a business is a demanding task that requires a lot of energy, time and resources. Founders and entrepreneurs often work long hours, make difficult decisions and face numerous challenges daily. They also have worries of cash flow and feel a great deal of pressure to succeed, both for themselves and for their stakeholders.

Trying to keep up with this demanding, fast pace of work can take a toll on your physical and mental health, leading to burnout.

Combatting burnout as a business owner

One of the reasons founders and business owners are particularly prone to burnout is because running a business requires you to wear many hats and juggle multiple responsibilities, often with limited resources, especially in the startup phase which can lead to working long hours and exhaustion. One of the biggest traps of being an entrepreneur is that you love what you do with so much passion that you often forget to take a break and other areas of our life are compromised.

However, it does not have to be this way and by putting in a few simple strategies in place, you can keep up the pace without burning out.

Here are some tips that I share in my coaching work with many founders and entrepreneurs to stay energised without burning out.

1. Surround yourself with support

Starting and running a business can be quite lonely, and it’s essential to have a support network to lean on when things get tough. One thing I love doing is meeting like-minded people who understand the challenges you face and can offer support, encouragement, advice and feedback. Perhaps consider joining a business group or networking organisation, attending conferences and events, or hiring a mentor or coach to provide guidance and support.

2. Give yourself some time off

It can be challenging for entrepreneurs to take time off from their businesses, especially in the early stages when every decision can have a significant impact. However, taking time off is essential to avoid burnout.

Taking a holiday, spending time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies, or simply taking a day off can help you recharge your batteries and come back to work with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Mark in your calendar afternoons off and weekend getaways to balance out the busy pace.

3. Delegate some responsibilities

As an entrepreneur, it can be tempting to try to do everything yourself to ensure that everything is done correctly. However, taking on too much can lead to physical, mental and emotional fatigue.

To avoid burnout, delegate responsibilities to other team members, freelancers or third-party providers. This will not only help you free up your time and focus on critical tasks, but also empower your team members and develop their skills.

Ask yourself this question, what daily tasks can I eliminate, delegate or automate?

4. Celebrate and acknowledge success

Too often as entrepreneurs, itโ€™s easy to keep moving way too fast from task to task and chasing the next exciting opportunity. Itโ€™s important to celebrate the successes and milestones along the way.

Take time to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work you are doing and the contributions of your team members. Reward yourself and your team when you achieve goals such as product launches, revenue goals or customer acquisitions.

Celebrating achievements can help you stay motivated, boost morale, and create a positive work environment.

5. Practice consistent self-care

The most important asset in your business is YOU! Taking care of your physical and mental health is crucial to staying energised and avoiding burnout.

Make sure that you get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and take regular renewal breaks throughout the day. Additionally, consider practicing meditation or other relaxation techniques to maintain balance in your life. Give yourself permission to have some downtime away from your business, because it may be the very thing you need the most to be more productive, instead of relentlessly trying to push through.
