Calling all tradies: QLD train project kicks off massive hiring spree
If you’re a tradie chasing reliable, long-term work, this announcement from the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) may be your golden ticket.
A massive jobs bonanza has kicked off in Queensland, with around 300 new roles on the table thanks to the state’s revived Queensland Train Manufacturing Program And the best part? They’re actively looking for tradies like boilermakers, sparkies, mechanics, painters, and fabricators to jump onboard.
The work will centre around a new manufacturing hub in Torbanlea, just outside Maryborough, where 65 six-car passenger trains will be built over the next few years. The first trains are expected to roll onto the tracks in 2027, with the full fleet in service by 2032, just in time for the Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.

Tradie jobs, local focus
Manufacturing Minister Dale Last says the jobs drive marks a fresh start for the project, which had been derailed by delays and budget blowouts.
“This recruitment drive marks a critical turning point,” Last said.
“Over the next year, Downer will be looking for skilled workers—so my message to tradies is simple: get your CV ready.”
Hiring will be done in stages, with the first wave of jobs already open for expressions of interest. And it’s not just a one-off gig, this is a long-haul project with career potential.
Maryborough MP John Barounis says the focus is firmly on local workers, with opportunities for apprenticeships and upskilling young people in the region.
“These aren’t just jobs. They’re proper career pathways,” he said. “We want to see locals through the door first, exactly as it should be.”
The facility itself is already taking shape, with the building’s structure and roofing complete and internal fit-out now underway. As construction wraps up, the hiring push will ramp up even more.
