It might be a cliché, but family businesses are the beating heart of the Australian economy. So, now it’s time to celebrate them. Business Builders is on the hunt for Australia’s Favourite Family Business 2025, and the winner will walk away with a $48k media package.

Why family businesses matter

Now in its eighth year, Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition highlights the passion, resilience and innovation that family businesses bring to the table. From the countless teams they sponsor, to the community gatherings they foster, to the jobs they provide… Family businesses keep our neighbourhoods and towns buzzing.

Australia is home to more than 1.4 million family businesses, making up around 70 per cent of all businesses in the country. Collectively, they employ over half of the nation’s workforce and contribute an estimated $4.3 trillion in assets to the economy. So, isn’t it time we gave them some recognition?

Celebrating family business success stories

Last year’s winner, Melissa Wilkinson from Personalised Favours, says winning the competition gave her business a powerful boost.

“Being named Australia’s Favourite Family Business for 2024 not only validates the years of hard work we have put into building our business, but it also opens up incredible opportunities,” Melissa explains.

“One of the most exciting outcomes was that we were featured on Kochie’s Business Builders TV show in 2025. This exposure gave our business a platform to reach even more people and share our business success story. It helped us grow and connect with new customers while strengthening the trust and relationships we have built with our community.”

Why we’re running it

Editor of Kochie’s Business Builders, Cec Busby, says the competition is about more than finding one standout business, it’s about recognising the collective contribution family businesses make across Australia.

“Cliches are cliches because they’re a truism,” says Busby. “And family businesses are the unsung heroes of our economy. They keep local communities thriving, they innovate, and they create opportunities for future generations. This competition is about celebrating those stories and giving them the platform they deserve.”

She adds that showcasing family business success stories can inspire others to take the leap.

“Every year we’re blown away by the ingenuity, determination and creativity of the businesses that enter. By sharing these stories, we hope to encourage more Australians to support family-run enterprises and to remind business owners that they’re not alone on the journey.”
