Hiring staff: A CEO’s perspective, the struggle to fill jobs is real
It’s no secret for employers that hunting for top-notch talent to fill jobs can be daunting. We recently went through the hiring process, and let me tell you, the struggle is indeed real for both employers and job seekers, writes Amberlea Henriques founder of Ad Social.
Out of the 79 applications we received, only five truly shone and showcased their credentials in a way that caught our attention. And of those, the one that stood out amongst others – later revealed at the interview stage that claims made on their resume were inflated compared to their genuine understanding.
Following that experience, it’s pretty clear that there’s a gap between what marketing agencies like ours are looking for and how job seekers are tackling the application process. So, let’s dig into the details and share some savvy tips to help you show off your experience in the best light possible.
Presentation is key
First impressions matter, and a well-structured resume can make a world of difference. It’s astonishing how many resumes lack attention to detail and fail to present the candidate’s qualifications effectively. When crafting your resume, make sure it flows logically, highlights relevant experience sequentially, and emphasises your skills. Use bullet points, clear headings, and quantify your achievements. Think of it as your marketing pitch to the employer. The easier it is to read and the more it stands out, the better your chances. Read the position description, and where relevant, ensure your resume highlights these. Bold fonts and bullet points are a great way to summarise your suitability
Realistic expectations matter
While ambition is commendable, unrealistic salary expectations can be a major hurdle. To job seekers, I say this with utmost sincerity: Research the role you’re applying for and understand the industry standard for your level of experience. Pricing yourself out of the market can lead to missed opportunities. Consider a strategic approach by demonstrating your passion for learning and growth. When negotiating, consider adding a performance-based clause tied to skill development and contributions to the company’s success. This not only shows flexibility but also a commitment to continuous improvement.
Leverage referrals and LinkedIn
Referrals are a goldmine for both employers and job seekers. As an employer, tapping into your professional network and asking for recommendations can yield excellent results. Job seekers, don’t underestimate the power of networking. LinkedIn is a fantastic resource for professionals who actively maintain a polished and professional profile. Join relevant groups, participate in discussions, and showcase your expertise. A well-crafted LinkedIn profile can make you stand out in a sea of applicants.
Demonstrate your creativity
In marketing, creativity is a cornerstone skill. Job seekers, don’t just tell us you’re creative – show us! Share examples of campaigns you’ve been involved with, whether they’re personal projects or work for previous employers. Discuss your creative process, problem-solving skills, and your ideas’ impact on the company’s outcomes. A portfolio showcasing your work speaks volumes and sets you apart from those who merely list their job responsibilities.
Invest in skill development
Short-term placements can sometimes raise eyebrows for employers. On the other hand, showcasing a commitment to skill development is a huge plus to employers looking to fill jobs. Highlight any online courses, certifications, or internships you’ve completed. The marketing landscape evolves rapidly, and employers value candidates who are dedicated to staying current and improving their skillset
Job seekers it is crucial that you present yourselves in the best possible light, with an eye-catching resume, realistic expectations, and a strong showcase of creativity and skill. And to fellow employers, let’s not underestimate the potential of referrals, the power of LinkedIn, and the importance of looking beyond short-term placements. By implementing these strategies, we can bridge the gap, find the best talent, and drive our agencies and companies to new heights.
Here’s to a brighter future for both employers and job seekers. The perfect match is out there – let’s connect!
