What Google’s AI search update means for your business

If you haven’t heard, Google’s testing a new AI feature that might just shake things up for anyone with an online presence. They’re calling it “AI overview,” and it’s set to make search results more user-friendly. So, what does this mean for your business?

What’s the deal with Google’s AI Search?

Google’s latest AI trick aims to handle those specific, wordy questions we sometimes type into search—things like, “Is Newcastle or Port Macquarie better for a family holiday with kids and a dog?” In the past, Google would probably give you a list of links. Now, this new AI overview feature will give a full, cohesive answer as the first cab off the rank.

In a recent episode of Kochie’s Business Builders TV, Nick Brogden, digital marketing expert, summed it up well: “It’s gonna sit at the top of Google search results, similar to where you currently see featured snippets.” Think of it like having an ultra-smart Google answer buddy who’s done all the research for you.

Why this update matters for your business

While Google’s still testing this feature, mostly in the U.S., it’s worth paying attention. For small businesses, the potential benefits are enormous. If you sell products or services, Google’s new setup could showcase what you offer more prominently. As Nick explained, “If you’re a business that has a product or service, it could actually benefit a lot. Say someone’s Googling for the best bike for city commuting. Google might show an answer along with places to buy it—your shop could be one of them.”

However, for sites that rely on ad revenue, Nick warns it “might not send traffic your way as much as before”. So, while this could mean more eyes on your products, it may also reduce overall site visits in some cases.

So, how should you tweak your SEO?

So, how can you keep your content relevant with these changes? According to Nick, it’s the “million dollar question. The good news? The answer hasn’t really changed—it’s still about quality.

“You need to make sure the content on your website is really, really high value,” Nick said. In other words, skip the fluff and focus on creating content that genuinely helps or educates your readers. Google’s algorithms have always favoured quality, but now, with AI digging even deeper, it’s more essential than ever.

And here’s a tip: Don’t just turn to AI tools to crank out generic content. Nick warned, “Google can detect if there’s no expertise in an article.” So, if you’re writing or commissioning content, make sure someone knowledgeable checks them over to add genuine insights.

Building a trustworthy digital footprint

According to Nick, “Your digital footprint has never been more powerful if you do it right, and it’s never been more worthless if you take it for granted.”

It’s not just about stuffing your site with keywords. Instead, focus on creating a site that showcases what you’re all about—products, services, values, and expertise.

Google’s blog backs this up, noting that this AI overview will likely favour content that’s authentic, helpful, and created by actual experts. So, share what you know, add customer reviews, and keep your website current. Nick suggests these changes give small businesses a real chance to compete in search results by offering genuine value.

What’s next for Google’s AI Search?

Right now, Google’s AI search is still a work in progress. But as Nick mentioned, we’re likely to see more of these AI-driven summaries rolling out soon. As a small business owner, keep an eye on these developments. Google’s new AI tools aren’t about to replace your website, but they’re a reminder to prioritise quality and relevance in every piece of content you publish.

In Nick’s words, “It’s about running a business as well as you can… and being genuine about who you are and what you do.” The better your content, the more likely you are to show up in these new AI-powered search results.
