With Aussies heading to the polls in May, now is the time for small business owners to speak up, and there’s a new campaign helping them do just that. The Fair Go for Small Business campaign, launched by COSBOA (Council of Small Business Organisations Australia), is calling on politicians to back the sector that powers our economy and our communities.

Whether you’re running a café, managing a tradie business, or juggling a side hustle while raising a family, this campaign is about making sure your voice is heard in Canberra.

Why small businesses need to raise their voice right now

The federal election is set for May 3, 2025, and that means every political party is busy shaping their policies and priorities right now. While big business and unions often have a seat at the table, small businesses can struggle to cut through the noise, and that’s exactly what this campaign aims to change.

COSBOA wants to remind politicians that small businesses aren’t just economic drivers. They’re the friendly faces behind your morning coffee, the sponsors of your local footy team, and the first to chip in for the school raffle. They employ over 5 million Australians and contribute more than $500 billion to the economy every year. In short: they matter. And they deserve a fair go.

What does “a fair go” look like?

It’s about policies that support, not stifle, small business growth. Think fairer tax settings, simpler compliance, affordable energy and insurance, better access to skilled workers, and more support with digital tools and technology. It’s also about making sure small businesses have a seat at the table when decisions are being made.

According to COSBOA CEO Luke Achterstraat, now’s the time to act:

“We need to ensure politicians from all sides understand how important small business is to Australia’s future – and that they commit to policies that will help our sector thrive.”
