Are you a victim of ‘Quitter’s Day’? Try these goal-setting strategies

January marks the beginning of a new year, and new opportunity to achieve your business goals.

Whilst it may be tempting to fall into the habit of setting new year’s resolutions – research shows that most new year’s resolutions fail by the second Friday of January – a day now coined as ‘Quitter’s Day’.

As a mindset and productivity expert, I have come to see that those who achieve their goals usually have the appropriate tools, plans and habits in place that support the achievement of those goals. Here are 5 strategies that will help you to achieve your business goals in 2025:

1. Create a clear vision

Create a clear and compelling vision as to how you want to experience your 2025 year in business and in life. Who do you want to become? What do you wish to experience? What would you like to achieve?

When you have a powerful and compelling ‘why’, the ‘how’ becomes easier.

2. Create a solid plan

As the old adage goes, “A goal without a plan, is simply a wish.” Carve out time this month to create a plan that will support you meeting your goals in 2025. If you want to launch a new product, grow your current offerings or hit a certain revenue target by a certain date, what would be the specific activities that you would have to focus on, to ensure that goal is met? Utilise your calendar to reverse engineer those specific actions and outcome-based tasks, so they are reflected in your daily schedule. The more specific you are able to get, the more likely you will be to follow the plan.

3. Create daily habits that support your vison and goals

One of the many reasons why new year’s resolutions rarely actualise, is because the daily actions and behaviours required to attain those goals are often overlooked. It is not enough to say ‘grow my business’ or ‘get fit’ this year. Vague goals usually lead to vague outcomes.

Instead, focus on the habits, behaviours and actions that support the actualisation of that goal. For example, if you want to grow your business revenue by 20 per cent, what would be the quarterly, monthly, weekly or daily activities to support that growth objective?

4. Eliminate distractions

In 2025 the world has never been filled with more noise, distractions and reasons to live in a perpetually overwhelmed state. Learn to observe and identify the key distractions that steal your focus. Whether it is scrolling too much, getting distracted by news and emails or procrastinating, the first step to change starts by gaining conscious awareness of where your precious attention is going.

5. Master the Art of Focus

In today’s digital age, our attention and focus have become our greatest commodities. Learn to master the art of focus by implementing strategies such as planning methodologies, time blocking, scheduled social media breaks and other practices to safeguard your focus. If you find yourself get easily distracted, try placing your phone on aeroplane mode, completing a block of work and then rewarding yourself with checking your emails, social media and notifications. Your productivity and business goals will thank you for it!

Achieving your business goals in 2025

Creating a vision and aligning your daily actions, behaviours and habits towards that vision, can be a powerful way to build momentum. Furthermore, gaining clarity on what you want to focus on and eliminating any distractions will get you one step closer to achieving your business goals in 2025.
