5 common AI prompting mistakes small businesses should avoid

It seems clear that AI has the potential to transform small businesses and provide them with valuable time and cost savings, but using AI is not as simple as plug-and-play. For AI to be effective, a great prompt is needed. Suzanne Mitchell from GoDaddy explains.

In recent research conducted by GoDaddy in May 2024 among 300 small business owners in Australia, participants reported that leveraging AI resulted in significant efficiency gains. For example, as part of the research, entrepreneurs using AI reported saving an average of 27 hours per month, totalling 324 hours annually, equivalent to nine working weeks (based on an average 36 hour working week).

Moreover, the financial savings from AI adoption can amount to $7,800 AUD per year per entrepreneur. Added to this 50% said they have been able to reinvest in product development, and 25% reported having even started an additional microbusiness, further fueling growth and innovation within the entrepreneur economy.

In Australia, we can also see business owners are utilising AI across various functions, such as content creation, marketing support, and customer service enhancement. Ourย  research also showed that the adoption of AI not only has the potential to lead to operational efficiencies but, also to help alleviate some of the stress associated with running a small business. This was evident on the basis that of those surveyed who said they ย have implemented AI, over half reported that they feel less stressed (52%), and a significant portion reported having more time for personal activities (42%).

Despite the benefits of AI, businesses can often make common errors that hinder its effectiveness.

Here are five key mistakes we think you need to avoid when creating AI prompts

1. Lack of specificity in prompts

Providing vague instructions to AI systems can often result in generic outputs that may not align with your objectives. To help enhance the accuracy of AI-generated content, it is recommended that you provide clear context and details in your prompts..

Solution: Implement a Role-Task-Audience Framework

  • Role: Specify the role the AI should assume, such as a copywriter or technical expert.
  • Task: Clearly define the action required, whether it’s drafting a blog post or creating a report summary.
  • Audience: Identify the target audience for the generated content.

By structuring your prompts within this framework, you are more likely to improve the quality and relevance of the AI-generated outputs.

2. Lack of style guidance

AI-generated content may lack a consistent tone or style if not provided with specific instructions on how to deliver the information.

Solution: Define Style and Output Requirements

  • Specify the desired style, such as conversational or professional.
  • Outline the format of the output, such as bullet points or comparison tables.

By setting clear guidelines for style and format, you are more likely to ensure that the AI produces content that aligns with your brand or small business image. Plan for human review of the content to help ensure the AI-generated content is aligned with your brand and company.

3. Overly complex prompts

Complicated prompts can often confuse AI systems and lead to suboptimal results. There is a balance between sharing enough specific ย and targeted information to help elicit accurate outputs of content, while at the same time keeping prompts ย simple and straightforward. .

Solution: Simplify Instructions

  • Avoid overly detailed prompts and focus on conveying the essential information.
  • Provide clear and concise prompts to help the AI generate content effectively.

By simplifying instructions, you can help enable the AI to focus on delivering high-quality outputs without unnecessary complexity.

4. Unrealistic expectations

Expecting flawless results from AI on the first attempt can often lead to disappointment. Embracing an iterative approach can allow for continuous improvement and refinement.

Solution: Embrace Iteration

  • Treat AI interactions as a dialogue, refining prompts based on initial outputs.
  • Provide feedback to the AI system to enhance future results gradually.

By engaging in iterative interactions with AI, you can look to train the system to better understand your requirements and preferences.

5. Not verifying AI-generated content

AI-generated content may contain errors or inaccuracies, necessitating manual verification to help ensure reliability.

Solution: Verify Content Accuracy with human involvement

  • Conduct thorough fact-checking of AI outputs to validate information.
  • Exercise critical judgment when assessing AI-generated content, particularly in critical or sensitive contexts.

By verifying the accuracy of AI outputs, you can help mitigate the risk of misinformation and help validate the reliability of the generated content being used for your business.

In conclusion, by avoiding these common pitfalls and optimising your approach to utilising AI, small businesses can look to leverage the full potential of this technology, to help enhance efficiency and help drive growth.
