Try these outdoor activities to help with your anxiety
Being outside surrounded by nature can really enhance wellbeing. Just think about how you felt the last time you were out surrounded by greenery. In fact, studies show that being in nature or anywhere thereโs a green environment improves your mood drastically, writes fitness coach Heidi Rosenberg.
Exercise is so important and not just for your physical health, but also your mental health. Doing a vigorous workout every day helps reduce your anxiety symptoms for hours and has been proven to have long-lasting effects. Setting up an outdoor gym is a great idea if you want to decrease your anxiety symptoms.
You donโt even need it to be big, either. Just going to purchase a couple of small and portable pieces of gym equipment can do just the trick. Create a workout routine that works for you while taking into consideration all the gym equipment you just purchased.
Having an outdoor gym area in your backyard can be more beneficial for your anxiety because youโre not just working out to help with your symptoms. You are also surrounded by all the lovely green scenery. Itโs a double dose of all-natural medicine, and thatโs the best kind.
Going out for a bike ride is a great way to reduce your anxiety symptoms because it boosts your mood and decreases the feelings which cause anxiety and stress. Even if you go for just a short bike ride around town it can do so much good to your mind and body. What helps as well is having a good biker buddy with you to keep you company on your ride. This could be a good supportive friend or a pet who also loves going outside.
Just like the above physical activities that Iโve mentioned, if you donโt have a bike or a backyard, you can always go out in nature and enjoy a nice refreshing run or walk. Doing this also releases endorphins to your brain, which puts you in that โfeel-good moodโ state of mind. Plus, you can do this activity whenever you get free time from your busy day. Having people tag along with you or your pet can be just as fun and keep you company.
Finding a nice quiet spot away from everything is an excellent place to start when trying to meditate outside. Meditation is a mindful and peaceful way to relax the mind and ease away anxiety.
If meditation isnโt quite for you, then thereโs a different type of meditation you can try. Itโs called forest bathing, and it comes from Japan. To put it simply, forest bathing is just talking a slow walk through the forest. Not thinking of anything or doing anything (besides walking calmly) is just being. Being present in the moment and focusing on that. Studies show that forest bathing helps slow the heart rate and reduce blood pressure. It brings a wave of positive emotions through you and pushes away any negative feelings and thoughts.
Starting to do yoga, in general, is always good and healthy for you, but outdoor yoga is even better! As you are calmly going through your yoga routine and focusing on your breath, think of all the fresh air youโre breathing in from all the nature surrounding you. Even if youโre not the most flexible person, there are plenty of yoga routines out there for beginners. One style of yoga that is best recommended to reduce anxiety is Hatha yoga. Hatha yoga has a slower pace and more effortless movements, which beginners will like.
Final Words
In conclusion, there are a good few activities that you can do outdoors to reduce your anxiety symptoms. There are a variety of them too! From working out in an outdoor gym to getting more physical movement in with biking or running to meditation and yoga. So whichever one meets your needs or best suits your personality and energy, you can be sure that there is one activity out there for you.
