How to build shopper loyalty: What Aussie consumers really want

Small business owners know that customer loyalty is gold, but what really makes shoppers stick around? New research from Mailchimp and Canvas8 reveals what drives Australians to keep buying from the same brands, and how businesses can turn these insights into action.

Why shoppers stay loyal

For many Aussie consumers, loyalty isn’t necessarily about love for a brand; instead, it’s about habit. According to the research, 25 per cent of Australians repeatedly purchase from the same brand simply because it’s part of their routine. Another 21 per cent stick with a brand because they know it will always be available, while 5 per cent admit they just can’t be bothered switching.

But preference does play a role. The report found that 42 per cent of Aussie shoppers stay loyal because they actively prefer a brand over its competitors. Meanwhile, trust is a huge factor: a massive 78 per cent of consumers will only buy from brands they consider trustworthy.

Key points

  • 97 per cent of Aussie shoppers say convenience keeps them coming back—so streamline your checkout and buying process.
  • 50 per cent expect deals and discounts, and younger shoppers value perks even more.
  • 78 per cent of consumers won’t buy from a brand they don’t trust—so focus on transparency and great service.

What shoppers expect from their favourite brands

Loyalty isn’t a one-way street. Consumers expect brands to put in the effort to keep them coming back. Half of all Australian shoppers (50 per cent) want brands to reward their loyalty with deals and discounts, and that figure jumps to 67 per cent for younger consumers aged 18-34.

Shoppers also want a seamless experience. A whopping 97 per cent said their preferred brand makes it quick and easy to purchase:making convenience the number one brand association for repeat purchases.

And it’s not just about transactions. Many consumers want brands to make them feel valued, with 54 per cent saying they appreciate brands that treat them well, and 53% looking for a sense of community.

How small businesses can build lasting loyalty

So, what does all this mean for small business owners? If you want to boost customer retention, you need to consider few key strategies. First, make buying effortless. Make sure your website is user-friendly, offer multiple payment options, and make the checkout process as smooth as possible. Reward your customer for their loyalty – it’s easier to do than you think. Whether it’s discounts, exclusive perks, or personalised offers, loyalty programs can go a long way in keeping customers engaged. Don’t break their trust. Transparency, consistency, and quality service will keep shoppers coming back. Responding to feedback and maintaining strong communication also helps. Engaging with your community, offering personal touches, and creating a strong brand identity can make customers feel more connected to your business. And when people feel like they belong they tend to stick around.

Loyal customers are the basis of any sustainable business. By understanding what drives shopper loyalty and acting on it, small businesses can create lasting relationships that keep customers coming back for more.
