Bottle it up! Nourishy makes storing breast milk easy as 1-2-3 years

“Our family started Nourishy to solve the challenges of storing and transporting breast milk,” explains Cass Wingrove, co-founder of Nourishy.

Cass tells Kochie’s Business Builders (KBB) that keeping breast milk safe and fresh for their children was a constant challenge, but the mum of three felt it shouldn’t have to be so difficult.

“After experiencing these struggles firsthand, we wanted to help other families by providing a safe and innovative solution to store and transport their breast milk.”

And so, in a game-changing move for Aussie families, Cass and her husband, Dean Blackbeard, came up with the idea for a breast milk freeze-drying service. After months of research the couple developed a unique process that transforms frozen breast milk into a powder with a long shelf life and Nourishy was boru. Nourishy makes it possible for mums to store breast milk in the cupboard – just like traditional powdered milk formulas.

The solution they created has redefined convenience for countless parents.

“Nourishy is Australia’s first breast milk freeze-drying service,” Cass says. “It transforms a mum’s breast milk stash into a powder that can last for three years, retaining all the nutritional benefits of fresh breast milk.”

Now, as a finalist in the Australia’s Favourite Family Business 2024 competition, Nourishy is gaining well-deserved recognition for its life-changing service.

Innovation nd family values

As Australia’s first freeze-drying service for breast milk, Nourishy stands out for its pioneering method, but it’s the personalised, family-centred approach that truly sets them apart.

“We’re a family-run business offering personalised service and pioneering breast milk freeze-drying in Australia, “Cass explains.

Nourishy collaborates with trusted partners, including Mikify and the Mother’s Milk Bank Charity, ensuring their service is both safe and trusted.

Working with these partners also allows Nourishy to reach more families needing breast milk solutions, reinforcing their dedication to supporting parents across Australia. For Cass and Dean, the mission is deeply personal and driven by their family values.

The highs and lows of family business life

Running a business with family is as rewarding as it is challenging. For Cass, the shared purpose and close-knit team make all the difference. “We love working together to support parents across Australia while building something meaningful that aligns with our values of family and care,” she says. But balancing family dynamics with the demands of a business isn’t always smooth sailing. “Balancing family life and business can be tough, but we’ve learned to navigate challenges by focusing on communication and our shared mission.”

Recognition and inspiration
Being a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business 2024 competition has brought Cass and Dean’s hard work into the spotlight, something they’re both grateful for. “Being a finalist is an incredible honour and a testament to our hard work and dedication to helping families with our unique services,” Cass reflects. Winning the award would give Nourishy further recognition, helping them reach more parents who could benefit from their services. “Winning would give us the recognition to reach more families in need of breast milk solutions and inspire other small family-run businesses,” Cass adds.

A mission to help other families

Ultimately, Nourishy is about more than freeze-dried breast milk. For Cass and Dean, it’s a way to support other parents who want the best for their babies but struggle with the limitations of traditional breast milk storage. “We’re here to make a difference – one bottle at a time,” Cass says with pride. Nourishy’s pioneering approach is changing lives, making it possible for mums to provide the best nutrition for their babies wherever they are, stress-free.

When we decided to go ahead and launch Nourishy, we knew that it was going to be a tough balancing act between being present, hands-on parents whilst also putting in a huge amount of time and energy into the business, ” Cass says. “I commend all parents out there as the juggle between work and family life is not an easy one. However, we know that building this business will also give us the freedom to create our own schedules and be even more available parents as the business grows and expands. We have high hopes that this will be a legacy that we have launched and built as a family.”
