When Alan and Susan Wright saw an ad from the Cobar Shire Council searching for a local printer, they were living the beach life in Culburra on the New South Wales south coast. But the pull of adventure and opportunity in the bush was too strong to ignore.

Alan, armed with years of experience at the Sydney Morning Herald and Shoalhaven Commercial Printers, convinced Susan to trade coastal views for Cobar’s red-dirt landscape. Together, they founded Central Commercial Printers (CCP), setting the foundations of what would become an enduring family business, now based in Bathurst, NSW.

“Fifty years ago, our adventurous parents, Alan and Susan Wright, embarked on an extraordinary journey that transformed a dream into reality,” says Peter Wright, reflecting on his mum and dad’s leap of faith. “Their determination to build something meaningful in a remote area sparked the foundation of what has become a beloved regional institution.”

A unique business with community at its heart

“For 50 years, we’ve been the heart and soul of printing in the Central West of New South Wales,” Peter says. Central Commercial Printers offers everything from high-quality offset and digital printing to graphic design and signage, Petter says CCP blends traditional craftsmanship with innovation, making it the go-to choice for businesses and individuals alike.

“Our rich 50-year history is woven into the fabric of our community, making us more than just a printing service—we’re a family legacy,” Peter explains. “The loyalty we foster among our team and customers creates bonds that transcend typical business interactions.”

The balance of family and business

Running a small business can be challenging, and when you add family to the mix, the stakes are even higher.

“In a family business, every day is a balancing act! Wearing multiple hats means being involved in every aspect, which can blur the lines between work and personal life,” says Peter . Yet, working with family also brings its rewards. “The shared purpose among family members creates an energising atmosphere. It’s not just about business; it’s about continuing a rich legacy that reflects our family’s values.”

Peter also notes that while family dynamics can lead to lively discussions, familial bonds can also help to rise above challenges. “Our strong relationships help us navigate these waters,” he says, adding that they continually work to embrace change while honouring their family’s cherished traditions.

Celebrating a milestone moment

This year, as CCP celebrates its 50th anniversary, being named a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition feels especially meaningful to the team. “Being a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition is an exhilarating honour!” says Peter. “It’s a recognition of our unwavering dedication and hard work over the years, a testament to the values of quality and service instilled by our parents.”

Winning, he says, would be a chance to share the Wright family’s story on a larger stage.

“It would be a spectacular celebration of our 50-year legacy,” Peter reflects. “Winning would amplify our story, reinforcing the importance of family values in business and inspiring future generations.”
