Mulbury: A family business where sustainability meets craftsmanship

For over 30 years, Mulbury has been turning old wood into new treasures. Founded on a passion for sustainability and love of artisan craftsmanship, this Melbourne-based family business has become known for its unique picture frames and homeware, all made from reclaimed Aussie timber. Now, as a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business 2024 competition, Mulbury’s founder, Gerard Melder, reflects on their journey and what makes this family business special.

Mulbury: where sustainability and purpose collide

Gerard tells Kochie’s Business Builders (KBB)  that Mulbury started with a simple yet purposeful mission: to create something sustainable that reflects good old-fashioned craftsmanship.

“We wanted to create something meaningful that aligned with our values of environmental responsibility, which is why we chose to focus on recycled timber picture frames and homeware,” he says.

The business found its roots in the team’s passion for working with natural Australian hardwood—particularly reclaimed Victorian Ash. “Using reclaimed timber saves our old growth forests for future generations to admire,” Gerard adds. “Every frame we make carries the story of the timber’s previous life, which makes it unique and full of character.”

A business with heart and soul

Mulbury prides itself on being more than just another homeware brand. For Gerard and his family, the heart and soul they put into their products is what sets them apart.

“Because we use reclaimed timber, each piece is truly one-of-a-kind,” he explains. “We’re hands-on in every part of the process—design, production, and customer service. That personal touch is something larger businesses just can’t replicate.”

Running a small, family-owned business also allows Mulbury to maintain a sharp focus on sustainability. “Everything we do has the environment in mind,” says Gerard. “That’s been our ethos from day one.”

The highs and lows of a family business

When asked what it’s like working alongside his family, Gerard admits it has its challenges—but the rewards make it worthwhile. “It’s not always easy to balance family relationships with business. The lines between work and personal life blur, and we’ve had a few passionate conversations along the way,” he laughs.

But he’s quick to point out the upsides. “Every success feels more meaningful because we’re building something together. It’s not just a job—it’s our legacy. Plus, we get to do things our way, and that kind of freedom is priceless.”

Mulbury is truly a family affair, with Gerard’s wife, two sons, and daughter-in-law all involved in the business. They’ve even brought two additional staff members into the fold, whom Gerard describes as “like family.”

Australia’s Favourite Family Business

For Gerard and his family, becoming a finalist in Australia’s Favourite Family Business competition is a moment of pride. “It’s an incredible honour and validation of all the hard work we’ve put in over the years,” he says. “We’re so grateful to be recognised alongside so many other inspiring family businesses.”

As for what winning the competition would mean to them, Gerard believes it would help amplify Mulbury’s message: that sustainability and craftsmanship go hand in hand. “Winning would be a massive boost—not just for us but for the idea that small, family-run businesses can make a big impact. It’s something we would take immense pride in, knowing that our customers and supporters believe in what we have done over the years and continue to this day.”

Whether or not they take home the top prize, one thing is clear—Mulbury’s journey is far from over. With their dedication to sustainability and craftsmanship, Gerard and his family continue to shape not just beautiful products but also a legacy that will endure for generations.
