How I launched a successful brand in the FMCG space

When you’re a disruptor in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry, every step towards innovation can feel like a leap into the unknown, explains Mez Jamali, founder of Wholesome Bowl

Our journey to launch Wholesome Bowl has been marked by challenges, lessons, and unexpected rewards. So,ย  I hope our experiences can light the way for future pioneers.

Find your tribe

One of the initial challenges we faced was securing a co-manufacturer who shared our vision. Being a newcomer with an innovative concept, we encountered resistance from manufacturers entrenched in traditional ways.

They were either unwilling to deviate from their comfort zones or hesitant to engage with a new business. That’s when I realised we needed to approach them as potential investors rather than mere service providers. By articulating our vision compellingly, we managed to enlist manufacturers who believed in our concept and were enthusiastic about our product’s future potential. In retrospect, early rejections served as a filter, eliminating unsuitable partners and guiding us to those ready to embark on this journey of innovation.

Standing out from the competition

We embarked on a strategic approach during our research and development phase to ensure Wholesome Bowl stood out in a highly competitive industry. Instead of chasing a single trend, we combined several major trends into our product while also identifying market gaps. The result was a unique blend of functional foods, convenience, and affordability, converging into a single, nutrient-rich instant noodle that was cost-effective and easy to prepare. Our branding strategy further differentiated us: while most FMCG companies opted for loud, vibrant packaging, we chose to project a sense of wholesomeness, giving birth to our brand, Wholesome Bowl.

Find your fan base

One of the most rewarding aspects of launching a pioneering product in the FMCG industry has been the overwhelming consumer response. As a fan of instant noodles, I longed for a healthier option, and finding others who shared this dream has been immensely gratifying. Witnessing customers use our product to achieve their health and nutrition goals, and their enthusiastic shares on social media, has been a tangible confirmation of our positive impact.

The journey from a startup to a recognised brand in the FMCG industry is undoubtedly challenging, but I advise aspiring entrepreneurs to embrace these hurdles as learning opportunities. Setbacks are inevitable, but they present invaluable lessons to refine your business. Don’t hesitate to seek out industry experts when you’re stuck. Many are willing to impart wisdom over a simple cup of coffee.

Reach for the impossible

The FMCG industry is constantly in flux, with shifting customer preferences, market trends, and industry dynamics. When we analyse trends, we must comprehend their interconnected nature. A critical lesson I’ve learned is that focusing on a single trend in isolation could lead to a product that’s misaligned with the market. Our ability to anticipate these changes and adapt our product accordingly has been crucial to our success.

Innovation in the FMCG industry requires resilience, strategic thinking, and a willingness to learn. It’s a challenging journey, but with the right mindset and approach, it’s possible to break new ground and bring pioneering products to life. Let us remember that every great innovation was once considered impossible.

So why not give your great idea a go!
